Kung Fu Hustle

dr_tectonicS'Pookie got a region-free DVD player with Xmas money, so we were able to watch our copy of Kung Fu Hustle tonight. My thoughts: lots of good wire work and fx (some moments I think might have out-Matrixed The Matrix), some neat concepts and visuals, and pretty damn funny. Quite enjoyable to watch.
There were fewer outright "whaaa?" moments than Shaolin Soccer, but still a fairly strong sense of foreign-ness, because Chinese movies show a lot of things that Hollywood just doesn't. In particular, peeing, snot, realistic violence as humor, and mocking people for being funny-looking. I'm pretty sure the actors were actually slapping one another in one shot, but then again, everyone in the movie is a martial artist/stunt-man, so I'm sure it wasn't a big deal.
All in all, it was a lot of fun. Recommended!
