Memo to myself: if you're feeling morose and ineffectual, the correct treatment is to go and do something.

Made ginger peach chicken stirfry from a recipe in the newspaper this evening. Not very exciting, but there was a nice flavor combination lurking underneath. And all the measuring and cutting and mixing improved my mood tremendously.

Yes, yes, idle hands = devil's work.

This is also a great way to deal with destructive impulses. Like, I won't have a smoke, I'll scrub the kitchen floor instead.

It's a healthy way to deal with destructive impulses, but I've got to say that it's not particularly persuasive unless you find the replacement as satisfying (in some sense) as what it's replacing. For me, cooking would be a potential substitution, scrubbing the kitchen floor would be compounding the problem. But that's just me.
