This evening I went over to Chris's and played Arkham Horror (the new edition) with him, Jeff, Matt, and Tom O. Talk about production values! Good LORD! Enough solid cardboard bits with pretty colors and different flavors of card that I was honestly surprised that it only cost about $50. Very complicated, but once we got the hang of it the turns went relatively quickly. And still it took us ALMOST FIVE HOURS to play! We came perilously close to losing (it's another one of those co-op play games) but pulled it out in the end and managed to defeat Yog-Sothoth (mostly through luck, I think). Fun and high-quality, but not a game I'd play too frequently -- too much work.

Chris and I were talking about this briefly (very briefly) last night. It occurred to me (or maybe to Chris . . . but to one of us at the very least) that games like Betrayal at the House on the Hill (or whatever it's called), Arkham Horror, and Talisman (as well as like, a million other Avalon Hill Games), while eschewing the more popular "Cheapass/German" simplicity aesthetic are still quite fun.

While James Ernst dazzled us for a time with his brilliant design work, and his quick, easy, and fun games, I think I forgot that complexity doesn't have to be tedious. (But what do I know?)
