What these researchers don't realize is that they were actually the subjects of a study to determine the overlap between the subculture known as "nerds" and the subculture known as "geeks." The study indicates at least three.

From the abstract: two Marvel characters are considered linked if they jointly appear in the same Marvel comic book.

Did they separately examine the network based on kinds of appearance? In a comic book, A vs. B is a very different relationship than A and B vs. C and D.

Given how often the initial meeting between two superheroes consists of them fighting because of a misunderstanding before they figure out that they're actually on the same side, and how often villains and heroes end up swapping sides, I don't know that it's a distinction that could be rigorously defined...
