Whose idea was it for the Earth to be all round and stuff?

It is highly inconvenient.

I'm tryin' to figure out how to make all these different grids line up, and it's a big pain in the butt because nobody can agree on what to do when you get to the poles.

Harrumph!

EDIT: And while I'm complaining, I would just like to point out that we are in the freaking 21st century now, there is no need to include rows of underscore characters in a form indicating where I'm supposed line things up on the typewriter when I fill it out. For that matter, there's no need to email me a bloody Word doc to get the information, either. Do they expect that I'm going to print the thing out and fill in my answers with a quill pen? Argh!

If it's any help, I think that Leper and Big Bird have both had to wrap their brains around this problem (mapping rectilinear grids onto the world). Leper for ShotSpotter, and Bird for the military simulation work he does for the military-industrial complex.

I like glass-nib pens over quills when it comes to dip-pens, myself, though quills can be fun. OTOH, I prefer steel or copper for my calligraphy dips.

I think that above the Arctic Circle, and below the Antarctic Circle, one should plot using distance out radius from pole and degree rotation from 0º/360º, with that direction originating at the termini of the Zero Meridian. But, alas, as you said, no one agrees. Sigh. Where's an International standard when one needs one, dammit.

The two projections I like most are the Eckert (if you need everything to remain connected) or a compound map (that I can't remember the name of) consisting of a circular arctic area, a rectangular main map, and a circular antarctic area, all lined up on your central Meridian.
