I now know more than I ever wanted to about the Lambert Conformal Conic map projection. That, and metadata conventions for describing it in NetCDF-formatted data files.

Y'know, understanding how objects relate to one another in 3 dimensions is really far more important to a scientific understanding of how the world works than anyone makes it out to be.

Lunch with friends (Mike & Kari) yesterday. Socialization at Chez Floyd Tuesday evening. Lots of organic juice on sale at the grocery store, and I discovered that there is Green & Black's ice cream. By many standards, my life is pretty pedestrian, but I have to say it's also really good.

Yes, that's true. Unfortunately, I really think it's one of those, "either you have it or you don't" things. I don't. My new student is studying beta-barrel membrane proteins (which are incredibly cool), and I told him a while ago that part of why I kept coming up with good ideas for him about how to analyze his data through 1-d and 2-d approaches was because not only are the 3-d methods really slow, but because my brain doesn't work with them.

He laughed, until I explained that yes, I really was serious, and if he wanted to talk exclusively about 3-d structures, and atom-atom connections, and ..., he'd need to find a new supervisor.

I have one friend who runs a company that makes hemispherical 3-d displays. He's the only person I know who really thinks in polar coordinates. It's wierd.
