Wading through my inbox this morning, I found a long, long thread on a mailing list I'm on titled "government craziness".

And I thought, you know what? That's just going to make me ill-tempered and crazy if I read it.

I checked a couple replies from people whose positions I can rely on to not make me batty, just to be sure that the discussion hadn't veered off into interesting-tangent land, and when I verified that it had not, I deleted the whole damn thread, completely unread.

And I'm feeling pretty decent tonight. So I think that was the right choice.

You are SO SMART! Why am I not this smart?!

At this point, such threads just make me vaguely sad rather than actively upset, but I think this is more because I have learned that I don't seek to make the world better but instead adapt my expectations to the world. Which says something about me that I'm still trying to figure out.

Like the rants about political this-and-that on Facebook, stuff like this is IMHO best dealt with in the manner you chose.

Brilliant choice. Truly brilliant. I only skimmed it myself, which led to much less stress overall.

At avoidance, or at tangenting?
