Okay! I need geek help!

I want to host some web stuff. Nothing fancy, just boring old html pages. (And maybe some pictures for my blog.) I know that I could pay someone a very minimal amount of money to do it, but I really feel like I ought to be able to do it myself for free, because:

I have a lovely linux box sitting in the other room. It has a static IP address and everything. It's running Fedora core (1 or 2) and I'm all but certain it's got apache installed. So how do I make it spew webpages onto the Intarweb? Is it actually as easy as it seems like it ought to be?

I probably also need to get a domain and make my computer respond to web.something.something instead of number.number.number.number the way it does right now. What's the best way to do that, given that I am both stingy and lazy?

There used to be lots of DIY pages, but that was back in the simple days. I no longer even know where to find the relevant info. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

T'anx!

OK - If you have Fedora Core you almost CERTAINLY have Apache installed - now where it wants you to PUT your web page is not my gig... but I'm sure there's a helpful man file there jsut awaiting your geekiness to open in vi/emacs/textedor of choice

If you have a static IP - there are free re-direct services like no-ip.com (drtectonic.no-ip.com), or you can pay a registrar for drtectonic.com/net/org/info/biz/etc

Does that help? Or amy I been lam-o and reiterating exactly what you already know.

Really really simple cheating method:

If you have a yahoo account, they have a deal thingy with geocities (lame, yes I know) that allows you to have a very simplistic webpage for free.

Also, since you have a paid account with Livejournal, you have access to the photo album feature. Photo homepage

All the other stuff, I haven't a clue on. That's why I know about the yahoo/geocities option.

let me know what you find. I'd read your ISP contract carefully and see if you are allowed to host outgoing bandwidth over the connection. I'm interested in doing the same thing, though I have even less knowledge than you do.

To think that in 1993, I fancied myself a techno-geek because I taught myself some basic HTML.

If you're interested, I'd be happy to give you the subdomain 'beemer.coder.com' or even 'dr.tectonic.coder.com'

Limited time offer... limited to the amount of time I keep paying the $8 yearly registration fee, that is.

There are oodles of free vanity subdomain names. da.ru comes to mind, but there are oodles. Or, $8 or so'll get you a domain name of your very own.

You'll need somebody to handle DNS to translate the domain name. I strongly recommend zoneedit.com - they're free.

I'd write more, but gotta leave for work!

Anything you learn, please relay on to me, because I want to do something similar myself, but have been too lame to start despite being annoyed with the ISP currently hosting my website. Heck, I don't even have a box set up with linux yet.

As far as Apache, if you can find out where it is in your system, I believe there's a big well-commented config file which has entries indicating which directories it's serving web pages from and things like that. The one time I installed Apache, I was looking at web pages about 10 minutes after downloading.

The DNS part I don't know anything about, and need to learn. Ask [livejournal.com profile] eto_theipi

The easiest way to deal with getting a name for your computer is to have someone with a domain you like to point a name at your static IP.

But if you want to host your own, I'd be happy to help you set up DNS (or with setting up a webserver, for that matter). I'd also be happy to host a secondary DNS server for you (and a store and forward mail exchanger, if you're receiving mail at your domain-to-be).

The O'Reilly DNS/Bind book is a pretty coherent explanation of the DNS system, if you want to understand how the whole thing works and why changes take so long to propagate. But you can get started by modifying a simple zone file.

Well, only possibly helpful

Living Stories is hosted with a great company called 5dollarhosting.com. They've got great back-end user support, and I'm more than happy to let them deal with the box. I don't know much about getting your box talking to the world, I think it's just a matter of registering it, but, although I've several registered domain names, I've no clue about servers. Sorry.

The nice thing about 5dollarhosting is that will also register your domain name when they set up the account. They'll charge you the registration fee from the place they use, which is like $10/year. SO, for, like $70, you can have a website for the entire year.

And, yes, it's true. I've got an LJ account now.

It ain't too hard. Set up some config files to tell Apache where things are, set a few options, tell the system to start httpd when it boot into multiuser mode, and put some content where you told Apache it would be.

I'm also willing to point to your server under any of my domains (vitriol.com, eggtooth.com, purrball.com, eggtoothimages.com, interestingtubes.com) if you like. You could have spewing.vitriol.com if you liked, fer instance.
