8 am, Descent, Bond

Oh, hooray, I do get to report for jury service tomorrow. At 8 am. How ever will I express my delight and elation. /daria

Not a lot to report from the last week other than an all-day session playing Descent with mel and Jason & Matt on Saturday, which was a lot of fun. We did the entire Trollfens add-on. The first encounter went to the heroes, the second was pretty much a gimme for the Overlord, the heroes rallied in the third and pulled off a very close victory, and then in the final encounter they stomped it pretty good. From which I conclude: game balance is tricky. Happily, it's a fun game to play whether you're winning or losing.

Um... I guess the other thing to mention is that I've been reading Film Crit Hulk's book-length review of the entire James Bond series, which is pretty interesting. I like Film Crit Hulk because he teaches me new things about movies cinema.

Would it fucking KILL Hulk to not write in ALL UPPER CASE? I can certainly import the damn essay into Word and shift it into Sentence Case, but...jeezus, Hulk, LEARN TO TURN OFF CAPS LOCK, wouldja?

I'm going to be cranky with you now. Jury duty is a constitutional right. It's a right that was actively denied to African Americans and women for a long time. It is the one opportunity nearly every American will have to directly participate in the government of this country.

If you're lucky, you may get to be a juror on a case today. While this may be a mild inconvenience for you, the litigants are going to be dealing with a serious dispute to them. If it is a criminal case, the defendant's liberty is at stake. If it's a civil case, you're going to have to help determine the litigant's rights and the fair compensation for a violation of those rights. I can't think of a smarter, more compassionate, or wiser person to help those folks than you.

You're more than capable of putting your considerable talents to work to escape jury duty. You'll like be successful. And that would be a shame, because you'd be taking a good juror out of the pool. Or you could walk in there with a good attitude and be yourself and maybe help resolve a serious dispute. In so doing, you'd be helping your community and exercising one of your most important civil rights.

I'm being good! I'm showing up with a willing attitude, and if impaneled, I will apply myself to the best of my abilities.

My main complaint is that there's no way to know going in how much time it will take, and if it takes more than a couple-few days, it has decent odds of DEEPLY fucking me over at work.

That, and the fact that I had to be here in Brighton at 8 goddamn am.

Also, you're right. Even if I'm not totally enthused, I can do my civic duty without grumbling about it publicly.

I think what happened is that I'm juggling a bunch of different things, and the additional stress of contingency planning for the uncertainty brought out my more uncharitable side. That's my bad, and I need to work on it.
