Merge my files, baby
May. 2nd, 2005 02:22 pmJust got finished merging all the code that I wrote last week with all the code that Eric wrote last week, and I have to say: FileMerge on the mac is one SEXY application. Wow!
Not only is it incredibly useful, and not only does it do exactly what you need it to, the interface is both intuitive and gorgeous! I totally love the swoopy okudagram change markers. And boy howdy, did it make the process about ten times faster and easier than it would have been otherwise.
Keep it up, Apple, and I may well switch. (Well, someday when I have a pile of money.)

Date: 2005-05-02 01:48 pm (UTC)dang, that does look sexy. Sorta star-trek next generation display... but it's practical.
Interestingly, apple seems to have gotten the idea from NeXT. who presumably wrote it before star-trek TNG.

Date: 2005-05-02 11:21 pm (UTC)We've been telling people for years to switch. Anyway, there are macs for 500 bucks if you are willing to use an old monitor, mouse and keyboard. But as soon as you want to do cooler stuff, like burn/author DVDs, and run stuff really fast, it starts getting expensive. Mind you, people think of me as a Mac person, but the truth is that every single time I need a new computer, I do some research, add up the figures, and the Mac still comes up cheaper than an equivalent PC. PCs seem cheap because you are only seeing the "frame": you buy the rest of the stuff to make it play at the same level of a Mac (more memory, peripherals etc) and it ends up costing way more.
And in any case, there is the cost of your time. People keep only looking at megahertz, but megahertz alone won't say, merge your files. Or avoid getting virus/spyware/worms/etc. There are very few instances where it makes sense to buy wintel, and when that is true, I tell people to buy wintel. But if you are coding, get a Mac. ;-)
