It's really amazing how much I can't get done when the internet goes out at work, because I can't test the game (it needs the network!) and I can't look anything up. Oh, and the phones stop working, because they're voip.

In Jeff's game, I thought that he had totally taken a first edition D&D creature (updated to 3E somewhere, I presume) and imported it to Star Wars, but it turns out that it was actually the module designers who did it! I was amused.

Yeah, our area of town lost power yesterday for three hours. That was productive.

Plus some really intelligent design on the fire alarm means that it goes off as soon as the power goes back on -- you know, just in case a fire broke out while it wasn't looking -- so then we all have to go and stand around outside for another twenty minutes. Great fun.

It just occurred to me that in ancient Rome there were probably times the potters were sitting around and bitching,

"Man, can you believe the aquaducts are out again! How are we supposed to get any work done when that thing springs a leak like every other month. This clay isn't moistening itself, you know. And even once they get it fixed it will take another few hours for the water to make it to us. 'Oh, aquaducts are the latest thing,' they told us. Well, our dependence on technology will be the death of us. I'm grabbing a bucket and going down to the Tiber."

"I'm grabbing a bucket and going down to the Tiber" is my new code-phrase for "I'm going home because my computer doesn't work".

...never mind that back then they measured the time things took to get done in, like months where now we get annoyed if [$favoriteoftenvisiteddistractionfromworkwebpage] loads in >5 seconds.

fsck the bucket...im movin my freaking wheel down to the beach...

We just went to VoIP for our phones, also. We are the backbone for a lot of people so we don't normally "go down" but next week we're moving from a 0C12 to 0C48 fiber from one of our main backbones. That also happens to be the backbone we use for our VoIP.

So, while we're busily hustling with our provider to upgrade we won't be able to take any support calls to tell all the slackers that don't read their announcements that we can't take calls during the outage.

Always a catch 22.

That sounds more like a special bonus than a catch-22 to me. =)

Well, in a sense, yes.

:)

But being on the consumer relations side of it and having to do damage control for the idiots later I am somewhat sad at the development.
