Because if mine don't stop hurting pretty soon, I'm going to start investigating ways to remove them.

You have sinuses for the same reason you have your testicles descended. But if you'd prefer a peltier device installed for the same purpose, that would be quite understandable.

My understanding is that sinuses are basically holes. Hence the discomfort when they get clogged. So if you were to remove them, you'd have... holes. I'm not sure this would be an improvement.

I had thought they were somehow connected to the immune system, but the wikipedia article gives more prosaic things like "make the voice more resonant" or "cushion blows to the face."

Okay, technically they're called "Neti Pots" but now that they have a plastic version you can grab for $10 at Walgreens, I think any formality goes out the window.

I'll second the Neti Pot. They're really quite useful devices.

In addition, I will teach you the magic word, which, when given to your doctor, will result in an immediate reduction in sinus pain. That word is "Entex."

This shit is so good it ought to be illegal. But since it's not, it ought to be available OTC. It's a mix of pseudephedrine and guiafenisen (and probably in doses larger than you can get OTC), that will dry you right up.

It's the bomb.

Mine quit bothering me after i greatly reduced my dairy intake. I also started taking lactase when i consume dairy. My sinuses have been much happier for it, plus fresh-cut grass doesn't make my eyes swell anymore. Apparently the grass irritation was a side effect of the dairy stuff. Who'd'a thunk.

If you didn't have sinuses, your head would be too heavy for you to lift. They basically make it so there's more than (or less than?) just brain and bone up there. The stuff you gave me worked quite well, but I'm sure you've already tried that. I hate perpetually stuffy, I'm sorry to hear you have it, too.

Oh, I have a whole bottle of Entex, which works great when I'm stuffed up.

The thing is, my sinuses were totally clear -- they just hurt. Fortunately a half-dozen ibuprofen made it all better.

I was thinking that it would be nice to know the mix of guaifenesen and pseudephedrine in the Entex so I could approximate it with OTCs, but now that I think about it, it's probably cheaper for me to just get the prescription stuff, my copay is so low.

Yeah. I learned in my intro to genetics class just how complicated all the molecular machinery in your body is, and how frequently it goes irreparably wrong in reproduction.

saintpookie has a squeeze bottle that does the same thing. I've used it once or twice when I was totally clogged up, and it does indeed work wonders.

The weird thing was my sinuses were all clear, just really painful. Ibuprofen fixed it -- but I should have remembered to try the sinus rinse.
